If you have ever been in the Casual Pint of Downtown, you have probably noticed our random shelf in the middle of the store. Or maybe you haven’t. It is behind you when you are browsing through our extensive collection of craft beer in the coolers, and it is out of sight when you are at the bar ordering a pint. Well, we have decided to dust it off and give it purpose. We want you to take notice of The Shelf, and we plan to accomplish this by periodically featuring some great craft beer with different deals and discounts! You can follow us on Twitter and Instagram, like us on Facebook, sign up for our newsletter, and keep an eye on this blog to stay up-to-date on our promotions.
This week, we are featuring canned beer. Canned beer has gotten a bad rap as cheap and low quality, stemming from the 60’s and 70’s when there was a market for canned beer so cheap, it wasn’t even branded. Many are still stuck on the idea that canned beer is of lower quality, but in truth, cans are actually a better storage container for beer, and more and more craft breweries are turning to cans to package its products. Cans provide a more airtight seal than bottles, better protecting your beer from oxygenation. They also completely block out light, which can react with hop proteins leading to “skunking”. In addition, cans are more portable for outdoor adventures, such as camping, hiking, rafting, or a day on the lake. They do not break, can be crushed for easier packing of empties, and are better for the environment! The idea that cans impart a metallic taste to beer is also a myth. Modern cans have a polymer lining that protects the beer from metallic off tastes. It should be noted, however, that if you drink straight from the can, you could possibly pick up on some metallic tastes from the lip of the can.
If you haven’t yet tried craft beer from a can, there is no better time than now! Come in to the Casual Pint of Downtown and check out The Shelf, where all 4, 6, and 12 packs of cans are 10% off through Sunday, June 22nd!
